Inpatient Mental Health

The Department of Veteran's Affairs developed a Mental Health Guide that offers recommended products and solutions to ensure individuals in inpatient care have a safe and therapeutically-enriching environment.

This report uses New York State Office of Mental Health incident reports to present historical data and a discussion of factors hospitals identified in their root cause analyses that may have contributed to the suicides or areas that otherwise called for improved performance.

Three versions of the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale are available for use in clinical practice. The Lifetime/Recent version allows practitioners to gather lifetime history of suicidality as well as any recent suicidal ideation and/or behavior.

Screening for suicide risk is a recommended practice for primary care, hospital and emergency department care, behavioral health care, and crisis response intervention.
