Peer-Assisted Suicide Prevention Programs in Prisons

Engaging lived experience is a fundamental component of the Zero Suicide framework. In several state and federal prisons, peers help monitor and support individuals in suicidal crisis. Sometimes called Suicide Prevention Aides or Patient Observers, these positions have the potential to encourage help-seeking behaviors, enhance supervision, and mitigate feelings of loneliness and isolation for residents on “suicide watch.”
