Between 2001 and 2019, the number of completed suicides in state and federal prisons increased 61% and 85% respectively, with most deaths occurring between 1 and 5 years into the sentence.  Over the same time period, there was a 13% increase in suicide deaths in jails, with more than half occurring within the first 30 days of incarceration.  The rate of suicide deaths in jails is nearly double that of prison deaths..1
